ALA 10th Grade Team

  • Payton hiking with husband

Payton Ayala - Math Models, Geometry, Algebra II

I just got married recently and moved from Austin to San Antonio, and my husband and I have a cat named Patrick (We have a love-hate relationship. Me and the cat, not me and my husband).

This is my fourth year teaching! Before this, I taught 8th grade math.

I enjoy cooking, working out, being outdoors, and watching anime with my husband.

  • Sam Glass with huge flask

Samuel Glass - Chemistry, Astronomy DC, College Math Prep

I have been a science teacher for over fourteen years. I have taught all levels of Chemistry including the College Board AP course and the ACS Chemistry Olympiad. I bring to the classroom my experiences as a Texas Master Naturalist, Instructional Dean of Science, laboratory research assistant, freelance web designer, and corporate manager. I really enjoy teaching, learning, and exploring our natural world as well as books, music, and film.

I am really, really lucky to be married to my best friend of over thirty years. We are voluntary participants in a long-term experimental ecosystem consisting of two humans (Homo sapiens sapiens), two cats (Felis silvestris catus), eight fish (Carassius auratus and Paracheirodon innesi), thirty-six shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), thirty-two plants (mostly Lamiaceae), and ten unidentified species of snail.

  • Dan Mallette in his tomato garden

    Dan Mallette - Design, Engineering

I teach 10th-grade Design II and 8th-grade Principles of Engineering. This is my 13th year teaching and I am really looking forward to implementing some unique project-based-learning experiences.

I am lucky to be married to my wife, Jenna, with whom we have two wonderful sons, Harrison and Owen. We also have to dogs, Bugzy and Excavator the Expert Dog.

I am a poet, photographer, and a chess enthusiast.

  • Brent with family in Egypt

Brent Ostos - AP World History, Hispanic American Studies

My storied career began in 1994 at Sam Houston High School. In 2002, I moved to Alamo Heights but returned to SAISD in 2017 as a DAEP administrator at Estrada Achievement Center. Two years later, my wife Jenny and I moved overseas to teach International Baccalaureate Chemistry and Economics, respectively. We worked in the Middle East and India. We have a twelve-year-old daughter who has been with us on our journey every step of the way. After the pandemic we returned home and I started work at ALA in 2021.

My curriculum and instructional expertise includes College Board Advance Placement courses such as AP Human Geo, AP World History, AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Government, AP Micro and AP Macroeconomics. I've been reading for the AP World History exam for the last two years.

I've come out of retirement to rejoin the 10th grade team and look forward to our trip to Puebla, Mexico, and the PBL we've designed around it.

  • Michelle Garza

Michelle Garza - English II & III, African American Studies DC, College English Prep

This is my first year at ALA, though I have been teaching for 14 years – with varied experience, from DAEP to IB to College/University.

I'm a writer, a reader, a gamer, an amateur baker, and an amateur(er) musician.

I'm looking forward to starting this year with this amazing team!
